Magia indiana
On the night of the Five Hundredth Moon, during the tribal council of the Darkwood chiefs, an unknown enemy leaves a broken spear for Zagor a traditional Native American symbol of vengeance.
Soon after returning to their hut in the swamp, Zagor and Chico are poisoned by a toxic gas and attacked by a group of Native warriors who, after knocking them unconscious, abduct them.
When Zagor regains consciousness, he finds himself forced to face a series of old enemies he believed long dead: the Delaware chief Kanoxen, Marcus the Bat-Man, the monstrous Molok, and Baron Wolfingham with his fish-men.
In reality, Zagor and Chico are prisoners in a cave, and while the Spirit with the Hatchet is caught in a spell that forces him to relive past battles suffering actual physical wounds, Chico is tied up and unable to help.
The mastermind behind all of this is none other than Devil Mask, the sorcerer Zagor had faced in issues N. 201 - 203 of the regular series. Contrary to what was believed, he had not died and has now returned to exact his revenge.
Zagor eventually realizes the illusory nature of the nightmare and breaks free, proving that his willpower is stronger than the enemy’s dark magic. In the final confrontation, Devil Mask is accidentally killed by a spear thrown by one of his own Native allies, originally meant for the Spirit with the Hatchet.
