Still pursuing Jacques Lassalle, Zagor and Chico are joined by Denise the fierce daughter of Captain Jean Lafitte and her loyal protectors, Jerome and Van Sutter. Their paths lead toward the mythical kingdom of Songhay and its mysterious queen, though not everyone will reach the fabled jungle city. Tragically, Jerome perishes before ever glimpsing its majestic walls.
Who is the queen ruling over this lost city, hidden deep in the jungle? And to whom do the zombie warriors who captured Zagor owe their loyalty? A familiar foe resurfaces more powerful and dangerous than ever. Using voodoo magic, she manipulates a memoryless Zagor into believing he is the reincarnation of the demigod Damballah, and even turns him against his own friends, Chico and Digging Bill!
What unfolds is a deadly struggle within the crumbling palaces of a forgotten empire an empire of black sorcerers, the undead, and ancient powers. At the center of it all is Marie Laveau, the beautiful voodoo witch, now allied with the sinister necromancer Vendhys. Together, they attempt to unleash terrible demons into the world.
And so, in this cursed city of shadows, Chico, Denise, and Digging Bill must fight not only supernatural enemies but also the terrifying possibility that their greatest threat is none other than Zagor himself, torn between the Spirit of Darkwood and the dark god Damballah!
