In search of Jacques, Zagor, Chico, and Digging Bill venture deep into the mysterious heart of Africa. Along their perilous journey, they encounter slave traders, a sinister fetish with dark magical powers, and an old friend they believed long dead. They soon discover that Jacques has been abducted by the necromancers of Kush terrifying sorcerers who dwell in a city of the dead and command the power to awaken corpses.

On the sun-scorched stone plains at the edge of the Djouf desert lies the necropolis of Achron. It was here, in ancient times, that the Kushite king Thaylas brought the scepter of Atlantis’ queen, Tin-Hinan. The search for the missing Lassalle intertwines with the quest for Thaylas’ mummified remains, which still clutch the legendary scepter an artifact the Tuareg princess Marada needs to unite her tribes under one banner.

But in the city of the dead, danger takes the monstrous form of ghouls, corpse-eating fiends. And under the burning sun, Zagor and Andrew Cain realize that the desert warlord Sheik Azim and his horsemen may prove to be an even greater threat.

The horrors don’t end there. After barely escaping the ghouls, Zagor, Cain, and the Tuareg warriors find brief refuge in the fortress of Gebel Shaat. But their rest is short-lived: an undead army besieges the walls, composed of all the soldiers whose bones have bleached beneath the Djouf’s cruel sun for centuries. At the head of this spectral horde march two Kushite high priests and only by striking them down can the nightmare be brought to an end!
