Following a serious head injury, Ken Parker loses his memory and is welcomed by a tribe of Hunkpapa Indians, who rename him Chemako, or "he who does not remember". In the village, Ken meets Belle McKeever, a white woman kidnapped by Indians while trying to reach Fort Browning, where her husband, an army surgeon, is located. Belle is now a prisoner of the Ottawa tribal chief, who intends to make her his squaw. During his stay in the village, Ken develops a deep bond with the community and falls in love with a woman from the tribe, the beautiful Tecumseh...

In the village, Ken meets Belle McKeever, wife of a surgeon at the Fort Browning military hospital, now a prisoner of Ottawa the Indian chief, who wants to make her his squaw.

The story takes place from the beginning to the end of 1871.
