Ken, having lost his memory, is welcomed into a tribe of Hunkpapa Indians with the name of Chemako ("he who does not remember"). In the village, Ken meets Belle McKeever, wife of a surgeon at the Fort Browning military hospital, now a prisoner of Ottawa the Indian chief, who wants to make her his squaw.
The story takes place from the beginning to the end of 1871.
