Robert Gray, known as the Alchemist, a former army major involved in the design of innovative and deadly weapons, lost his hands under mysterious circumstances and was therefore relieved of his duties. Thanks to his engineering genius, he built steel prostheses for himself and now seeks revenge on the colleagues who cast him aside, killing them mercilessly.

Defeated by Zagor in an initial confrontation and long believed dead, the criminal resurfaces, adding the Spirit of the Axe himself to the list of his intended victims. His first targets, however, are the Mohawk, guilty in the madman’s eyes of having betrayed him years earlier: using an ingenious system of timed mortars, Gray destroys their village, slaughtering all its inhabitants without mercy.

Determined to discover the location of a secret laboratory where the military is developing the very projects he had designed before being expelled from the army, Gray stops at nothing, leaving a long trail of blood behind him. Even Zagor and Chico, who attempt to block his path, are locked inside the dark tunnels of a mine, whose entrance the ruthless criminal blows up; fortunately, the two heroes manage to survive.

After forcing Colonel Portman, under torture, to reveal before dying the location of the secret base where the army is developing its lethal and innovative weapons, Robert Gray storms the facility and prepares to complete his revenge. Zagor, hunted by soldiers who believe him responsible for the colonel’s death, also reaches the laboratory to stop his diabolical enemy.

With a clever stratagem, Zagor manages to have Gray riddled with bullets by a device created by the Alchemist himself. Robert Gray will never harm anyone again.
