To appease the Morning Star, the Skidi kidnap young squaws from other tribes and sacrifice them to this deity: thus, their harvests will be abundant. But when Zanya, the daughter of Red Shield, the Cheyenne chief, ends up in their hands, Zagor and Chico throw themselves in pursuit of the ruthless Redskins.
Zagor reaches the kidnappers and discovers that Talesharo, the sakem of the Skidi, wants to put an end to the horrible custom of human sacrifices to the Morning Star. But the sorcerer Pauanas is against it, and is slowly poisoning Talesharo, to replace him with Kwitara, who is loyal to him. But Zagor intervenes, foils the sorcerer's plan and defeats Kwitara in a duel: a new era begins for the Skidi!

Zagor is hunting two criminals who injured Chico to steal the map of the lost Pegleg mine. He reaches the mine and discovers a strange community of miners. They have dull looks, sunken eyes: what happened to them? And why does an ancient Indian inscription warn to stay away from that area?

Meanwhile, a strange disease, capable of transforming those affected by it has struck Zagor and all the new arrivals in the Pegleg mine. Sektar a giant Micmac Indian, knows the true nature of the disease: it is the spirits of the forest that take possession of those who arrive in the cursed Pegleg mine!

Sektar has transformed the miners into zombies subjected to the spirits, burying them in a cemetery where a flame burns that has the power to bring the dead back to life. Zagor regains his strength and manages to annihilate the power of the spirits, with the consequence that the zombies return to death and Sektar goes mad.
