Francesco Gamba

Francesco Gamba

Francesco Gamba (La Spezia, October 15, 1926 – February 13, 2012) was an Italian comics artist and one of the most prolific creators in the history of Sergio Bonelli Editore, credited with over 21,000 pages of artwork. Born into an artistic family—his cousin was fellow comics artist Pietro Gamba—he debuted professionally in 1947 with the series Razzo Bill (Edizioni Alpe). In 1949, he drew Musetta for Edizioni Ippocampo and subsequently took over Yorga, originally created by Gianluigi Bonelli and Antonio Canale. Between 1950 and 1954, he was among the regular artists for Pecos Bill, written by Guido Martina and published by Mondadori.

During this period, Gamba also illustrated children’s fairy-tale books for Editrice Boschi and produced artwork for adventure books. In 1956, he began a long-standing collaboration with the Bonelli family’s publishing house (Audace), creating western series such as Terry and Yado with Gianluigi Bonelli, and Rocky Starr with Andrea Lavezzolo. In 1958, he was among the first illustrators of the iconic series Il Piccolo Ranger. Over the ensuing decades, he contributed stories to Zagor, Tex Willer, and, from 1990 onwards, the annual specials of Cico. In 2006, he also drew an anniversary story for Comandante Mark.

Beyond his Bonelli work, Gamba occasionally drew for the French market. He passed away on February 13, 2012, after a brief illness, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in Italian comics.
