While Carson is in the hands of El Tigre's coyoteros, Tex is forced to follow "Calavera" in search of Klaatu's mysterious gold. Scofield, after having stolen it from Guerrero's gang, had hidden the treasure map in his dog's collar and now Night Eagle deciphers it. Thanks to an old boatman, Tex gets rid of Nick by wounding him with an ax and, with a coup, takes Carson away from the Mexicans! Having reached the place indicated on the map, the rangers find Guerrero and catch him, discovering that he was unable to trace the gold deposit.

On the Kaibab Plateau, in Arizona, an Indian archer skewers Paul Scofield, an outlaw who is wandering through the snow with his dog. The pards recover the little animal and are attacked by the gang of extortionists who are rampant in Mike Creek, led by Nick "Calavera" Guerrero. Scofield had stolen an old Indian map from the gang that marks the location of a legendary goldfield and Guerrero is convinced that Tex and Carson know something about it. The gang is immediately eliminated, but Nick doesn't give up and, to hunt down the rangers, he allies himself with the desperados of El Tigre.
