Poe, commissioned by Clovis, the new editor of his newspaper, to write a story in the style of "Uncle Tom's Cabin", but also inspired by the adventures actually experienced by him and Magico Vento, gives life to the tragic story of a mixed couple: a former black slave who escaped after the Civil War with the young white heiress of the plantation where he worked.
