Poe, commissioned by Clovis, the new editor of his newspaper, to write a story in the style of "Uncle Tom's Cabin", but also inspired by the adventures actually experienced by him and Magico Vento, gives life to the tragic story of a mixed couple: a former black slave who escaped after the Civil War with the young white heiress of the plantation where he worked. It's not a kidnapping. The two have always been in love. But the woman's brother is a perverse aristocrat, now on the verge of madness, and chases the two fugitives from Louisiana to New Seville, a Hispanic colony in Colorado over which a noble knight, crazier than him, who considers himself heir of the Conquistadores, reigns supreme.
