While traveling back from a trip along the Pacific coast, Zagor and Chico come across the remains of a caravan that was attacked by Indians. A survivor, Professor Angus McFly, a scholar of Greek language and history, says he was a member of an archaeological expedition of which he was part together with other colleagues from Harvard University. The Indians who massacred his companions kidnapped a woman, Miss Julia Schulz, also a scholar following the expedition. The Spirit with the Hatchet immediately sets out, with the other two, in search of the robbers and the prisoner. But what were archaeologists looking for in the deserts of the South West?
