Corsa disperata
Kaufman, a mad German and former Prussian soldier, has transformed a desert island off the Atlantic coast of Virginia into a sort of private zoo, crowded with all sorts of predatory beasts. Man, for his sadistic amusement, throws human prey, captured by his men on the Continent, to the ferocious animals of his reserve. While investigating the death of a man from Norfolk, found dead at sea, Zagor and Chico are captured by Kaufman's henchmen, including a Malay called Tamau and a Maori called Rongo. If he wants to save the life of his Mexican friend, the Spirit with the Hatchet will be forced to cross the island and face the deadly wild beasts, lurking at every step... While trying to cross Kaufman Island to save Chico held prisoner by the sadistic German, Zagor faces the most diverse beasts and also finds himself confronted with the men in the madman's service, including a Masai named Kourbo who has trained a ferocious lion, Laaya. Having arrived in sight of an old English fortress, built on a rock overlooking the sea and transformed by Kaufman into his headquarters, the Spirit with the Hatchet also finds himself having to fight against a lethal white shark!... The showdown between Baron Kaufman and his men takes place inside a fortress overlooking the Ocean, in whose waters below, closed in a canal, a ferocious white shark moves: the last animal predator that the Spirit with the Hatchet will have to face before fighting against the human beasts in the Prussian's pay. Subsequently, in a wild territory, Zagor must lead to safety the few survivors of a hunter's outpost, attacked by the warlike Kaska Indians.
