In 17th century Austria, the inventor Wolfgang Von Kempelen built for Queen Maria Theresa an extraordinary automaton dressed like a Turk, capable of playing chess and beating any opponent. No one was able to ascertain with absolute certainty how it worked, also because the device was destroyed in a fire in 1854. In our time, a replica of the automaton created for an exhibition was subjected to a real attack. For what reason? Inspector Travis suspects that this is not a simple case of madness, and involves the Detective of the Impossible in what turns out to be an intricate mystery.
