Pablo Rochas, the trapper friend of Zagor to whom the Spirit with the Hatchet gave aid and saved him from the hunt of a group of militiamen belonging to a paramilitary body called the "Black Legion", concludes the story of his dramatic past, revealing why the legionaries are looking for him to kill him, after he, years earlier, throwing away the legion uniform which he had worn for a short period, found himself fighting against them. However, the "Black Legion" has other plans, in addition to taking revenge on Rochas: to attack and destroy an Indian village, a task for which they have been hired by those who have an interest in freeing the forest from the red Indians. Zagor discovers the militiamen's plan and tries to stop them, not hesitating to enter the enemy camp alone at night.

Zagor goes to look for him and discovers that his hut has been set on fire. Is it possible that the charred corpse he finds among the fire-blackened beams belongs to Rochas? And who are the mysterious militiamen of the elusive "Black Legion"? Our hero's investigations lead to the discovery of a tragic hidden secret from Pablo's past... While the men of the Black Legion continue to hunt him, Pablo Rochas continues the story of his dramatic past by explaining how, from being enrolled among the legionaries, he became their implacable enemy.
