The Spirit with the Hatchet returns to the inaccessible refuge on Canadian soil of Duke Smirnoff, but among the rubble of the fortress from which he dominated the territory he finds the corpse of the Russian despot. Years later, on a stormy night, an old friend of his travels to Darkwood to warn Zagor that Smirnoff, in reality, is still alive and is trying to start a war between the British and Russian Empires! Smirnoff wants to kill an English lord, heir to the throne of the British crown, placing the blame on the Russians, so as to start a war between the two empires.
