The story set in the city of diaphanous shadows ends and a new adventure begins for the Detective of the Impossible. The crew of the Space Shuttle "Vespucci", in orbit around the Earth, is the victim of an inexplicable phenomenon: while passing over Iraq, the astronauts suffer frightening visions. Upon returning, almost all the members of the mission die in an attack. Martin Mystère is called to investigate these events.

Mystère, together with Diana, Java and the adventurer Kramer, finds the city of diaphanous shadows in the Hangaj Mountains, Mongolia, where the tribe of Neanderthals from which Java himself comes survives. The aim of Martin and his companions is to discover what happened to a previous English expedition, but they will have to clash with a powerful Japanese organization which, informed by Sergei Orloff, wants to get their hands on the terrible secret that lies beneath the lost city.
