It is Julia's trusted bookseller, Mr. Klein, who calls the Garden City criminologist into question: a strange gentleman who frequented her bookshop, visiting it daily and regularly stopping to read the books on display as if he were in the library, has disappeared! He was a reserved guy, with a somewhat modest but not shabby appearance, who had the habit of showing up at the shop every afternoon, with impressive regularity! Now he hasn't been seen for a few days and Klein is worried... Julia, following the man's trail, finds his body, horribly disfigured. And, shortly thereafter, other bodies are found with the same signs of violence. From the examination of the crime scene, ritual elements emerge that lead Julia to think that she is faced with crimes committed by a serial killer...

Julia and Norma are kidnapped! The kidnappers know who they find themselves in their hands and they know that Norma knows very well a man, Bob Donner, who owes a million dollars to their criminal organization. Donner is a "bird of the woods" and, if Julia fails to track him down, his sister will be brutally killed! Time runs fast for the Garden City Criminologist and Norma's life depends on her investigative skills... but the traces left by those who don't want to be found are anything but easy to follow...
