The car of Richard Varelli, a colleague of Agent Nick Raider of the New York Police Homicide Squad, is found burned on a slope, with a charred body inside. The investigations immediately prove difficult and delicate for Nick, for Lieutenant Art Rayan and for computer expert Jimmy Garnet, forced to investigate the death of a dear friend and dig into his past. It is the revelations of the dwarf Alfie, a professional informant, that provide the key to shedding light on the affair and lead Nick to a solution that is much more dramatic and surprising than expected.
