On an asteroid near a "black hole" a probe identifies an artifact that appears similar to an Earth spaceship, even though no vessel of that type has disappeared. Nathan has the task of escorting the mission that must find out what it is. As if that weren't enough, subsequent measurements show profiles of the object that are very different from those recorded by the probe. Nathan decides to descend on the asteroid accompanied by the F2 robotic unit. Inside a cavity the two find a mysterious crystal that seems to radiate an energy, capable of ensnaring living beings and deceiving their instruments...
