Sheeta arrives at the Convent of the Guardian Nuns, to receive the just punishment following the death of her luresindo Arentèl. The established penalty is her death, but the council of the elderly decides to spare her life, preferring to cripple her and relegating her to servitude, that is, making her an Infima. This is due to the intervention of the Council of Luresindi, who would like to question her about Hecuba. However, the night before her execution, Sheda manages to escape, helped by a mysterious ally. She is then chased and joined by two "Grey Mothers", the nuns' internal military corps. The first is Klaerta , who wishes to kill Sheda as she accuses her of the death of their mutual lover, Elliah , years earlier., a young man from the Groom's Garden, a place where, following precise rules, the Guardian Mothers can satisfy their sexual needs. Sheda violated these rules as she fell in love with Elliah, she was discovered and in her punishment her nose was chopped off while the boy was executed. In the clash between Sheda and Klaerta, the latter has the worst and dies, but another Guardian Mother immediately appears, the second Gray Mother, who informs Sheda that her escape was allowed by the Mother Superior, and always by order of the Mother Superior gives her a necklace, on which the symbol of a noble house of the Great Lakes Enclave is engraved. The necklace was found with Sheda when she was picked up as an infant by the nuns and the symbol engraved on it should be that of her family, Sheda, finally saved, thus sets off in search of her.
