Bella and Bronco are in New Mexico tracking Prince to stop him from carrying out his plan to ally himself with the Apache. They stumble upon Taco, a mischievous boy, kidnapped by the redskins and struggling with a test in the desert to become a warrior, who acts as their guide to reach the Carnaval gang. Bronco tries to dissuade the ferocious leader from collaborating with the Southerners, but Prince has preceded him with tempting gifts... While Prince finds a way to keep his promise at Carnaval, Bella and Bronco are looking for a place where there isn't a grain of sand left. They don't really agree on which direction to take, but finally a fortuitous event decides for them: they come across a Northern patrol which they prefer to join, given that the Apaches are about to reach them... The task does not seem very demanding, especially since the volunteers are led by Major Chivington, a former preacher who has found a passionate vocation in the saber. Bella and Bronco care little about political issues, but they hope, by remaining with the soldiers, to be able to earn a nest egg by intercepting the Southern baggage trains. Only someone plots against them in the shadows...
