Near Merrywell, Pennsylvania, oil drilling is causing a series of environmental disasters in the area's rangelands. Having arrived in the city after having saved Ayashi from a summary execution, a Native American who has become a human wreck, addicted to alcohol and accused of the murder of a farmer, Zagor and Chico discover that the journalist Craig Turner is also in Merrywell. Turner suspects that the oil company, on whose payroll the local sheriff and his men are also behind the murder that Ayashi allegedly committed... Having escaped the men of the sheriff of Merrywell, thanks also to the help of Ayashi who has rediscovered his ancient warrior spirit, Zagor finds himself facing a new danger: an oil well has caught fire and the devastating fire risks spreading to the entire camp, also threatening the nearby valley and the city of Merrywell itself!
