An old, ghostly dwelling stands in Windy Cliff, the home of the Stanfords. It is there that Bat Batterton (with Zagor and Chico) accompanies his latest client, Alan Stanford, who is visiting his uncle. But his uncle has died of heart failure, after having seen the ghost of Priscilla Stanford, a girl burned at the stake centuries earlier for being a witch. Are the chilling moans coming from the oak tree near the villa hers?
Trampy now makes both ends meet by singing serenades to ugly, wealthy women. Chico copies him but with poor results: he is mistaken for one of his old enemies, the minstrel Guitar Jim, and beaten up. Thus Zagor decides to hunt for Guitar Jim: he and Chico pretend to be rich gold-diggers. But they are captured by a band of throat cutters…
