1889. Ugo Pastore, in Africa following his father who deals with business on behalf of Caput Mundi, a large Italian commercial company, takes part as a consultant in the signing of a treaty between Italy and Ethiopia. At the last moment he realizes that the two versions of the agreement, in Italian and in Amharic, differ in the wording of a fundamental article. However, he is unable to obtain any modification to the text and is convinced that a dispute with disastrous consequences is destined to arise from that misunderstanding, perhaps more intentional than accidental.
