Some men, led by Colonel Potosky, are looking for Count Boris and Prince Alexis, two exiles who fled from the Russian colony of Novograd, Alaska: they declare themselves sent by the Tsar. The prince will become the regent of the colony in place of the usurper Tarassenko. The trapper Rochas agrees to guide Potosky and his men to the place where Alexis would have taken refuge. But, a few days later, other Russians arrive saying that Potosky and his men are, in reality, Tarassenko's assassins.
