Kit Carson Sentenced to Death, with Proteus as Judge! Tex and his son free Capelli d'Argento from the Gallup prison, thus falling into the trap of the criminal who wants to turn them into outlaws for revenge. Only the skill of Aquila della Notte manages, in a crescendo of drama, to resolve the situation. Months later, in the Sangre de Cristo mountains, two hunters free a wild boy from a trap, the son of Matt Randall, kidnapped years earlier by the Arapahos.

The White Bison haunted him with omens of death: now the crazy rancher Langley really has the enormous creature in front of him, the sacred beast of the Cheyennes and, as in his nightmares, the rifle fails to fire! The following spring, in Gallup, Carson robs a bank and stabs the manager to death. Then he flees under the eyes of an astonished Kit Willer and, when he falls from his horse, he is caught and thrown into prison without much ceremony! Has the old pard perhaps gone mad? The only clue to solving the mystery is a note, signed with an enigmatic Greek "pi".
