Gray Wolf is locked in a cell at Fort Nelson: Colonel Middleton, an unworthy officer who intends to push the Cheyennes to dig up the hatchet and then crush them, has arrested the sakem to put him on trial. Tex, having dusted off the macabre costume of the Man of Death, makes the elderly chief escape and, with a clever trick, secretly distances his tribe from the reserve, separating old men, women and children from the warriors. The soldiers, who chase the Red Indians, are hindered by daring guerrilla actions.
