The following summer, the pards stop in San Francisco to greet Tom Devlin and Mike Stacy: but the sinister Diamond Jim, who runs a thousand illicit activities in the city, to avenge his brother killed by the rangers during a previous cleanup in Frisco, has Kit Willer kidnapped by Captain "Blackbeard" Drake, who takes him aboard his sailing ship, the Black Shark.
