Once the Northern tribes have been pacified, Tex and Kit Willer attack the lair of the Great King, a fortified castle in the middle of a lake. Kit is captured and, to free him, Tex attacks the manor at the head of an Indian army. Abandoned by everyone, the mad Black Leopard commits suicide by blowing up his lair. Much further south, in the Valley of the Moon, the miners of Ben Rufus, Tex's friend, are terrorized by a horrid humanoid creature: the monster, enticing the Apaches with a sort of freeze-dried alcohol, exploits them to extract deadly radioactive green rocks from the bowels of the earth!

The Great King, also known as the Black Leopard, is Louis Laplace, a rich black man dazzled by crazy ambitions of glory: hating white people to death, he wants to found a free Indian nation in the North. His advisor is the slimy Pierre Gaul, a money-hungry schemer who keeps in touch with Harry Madison's arms dealers, ready to supply the rising red rebellion with rifles. Tex recovers the totem of peace stolen from the Mohicans to convince them to go on the warpath and, using diplomacy and an iron fist, forces the rebels into a bloodless surrender.
