Once the mystery of the map is solved, Tex and "Calavera" find Klaatu's fabulous gold. Nick tries again to get rid of Willer, but the red Indian guardian's arrow shoots again, giving the story an unpredictable ending. Some time later, in Tucson, the journalist Herbert Addison, who is following the Hadley gang, is kidnapped by the rival Chase gang to demand a ransom from his father, Governor Edward. The pards handle the case on behalf of Mac Parland, but the arrogant Pinkerton agent Patrick O'Bannon, sent to help, prefers to investigate alone for career reasons.

On the Kaibab Plateau, in Arizona, an Indian archer skewers Paul Scofield, an outlaw who is wandering through the snow with his dog. The pards recover the little animal and are attacked by the gang of extortionists who are rampant in Mike Creek, led by Nick "Calavera" Guerrero. Scofield had stolen an old Indian map from the gang that marks the location of a legendary goldfield and Guerrero is convinced that Tex and Carson know something about it. The gang is immediately eliminated, but Nick doesn't give up and, to hunt down the rangers, he allies himself with the desperados of El Tigre.

Agent O'Bannon loves hasty methods: to find out where young Addison is, he hangs Blackie Logan, one of the kidnappers, from a tree and beats him to death in vain! The powerful senator Stanley, who must do a favor for certain Pinkerton agents, convinces his friend Addison senior to trust O'Bannon again. The plan is to pay the ransom and trap the kidnappers, but the bandits prank O'Bannon's men by blowing them up on a railway bridge!
