The law west of the Pecos is administered in a rather personal fashion by Judge Bean, more accustomed to saloons than to courtrooms. Thanks to Tex, Carson escapes the noose, but for the two rangers it is not over yet: Chris Carter, a greedy rancher who tyrannizes the Pecos country, is in league with Ribeira and Huerta, Mexican notables to whom he is to supply crates of Spencer rifles intended for the anti-government guerrillas. This is what the pards learn from Fisher, whose ranch is the target of harassment by Carter’s cowboys, and the two pards decide to lend him a hand.

A vision, a mirage, a ghost... yet Madame de Thebe, who appeared to Tex and Kit Carson in the New Mexico desert, seems real! The Egyptian fortune teller, who was traveling with all her belongings on a chariot accompanied by her faithful servant Ali, had been betrayed some time before by her guide: the infamous Tom Paxton had had the two swallowed up by quicksand to rob them! The woman, known as the Queen of Spades, had cursed her executioner, showing him the ring of Anubis. Today, Madame de Thebe, or her ghost, entrusts the jewel to Tex, tasking him with bringing a death message to Paxton.
