Tex recounts other events from his past, and this time they are memories of the Civil War. Tex and “Damned” Dick enlisted as civilian scouts in the 3rd Hunters of the Unionist army: the two wild pards became experts in sabotage and guerrilla warfare, with the aim of cutting off the Southerners' supplies of men and weapons. Thanks to them, a boat full of ammunition was blown up, while a railway convoy full of troops in gray uniforms was derailed by blows of dynamite.

The Apache beasts of the raider Wa-Ha-Tah, accomplice of the vile Fraser in arms trafficking, carry out a real massacre in Goldena. The pards, backed by the Cavalry, give no rest to the infamous murderers and the violent Indian chief is the first to die. The worst fate, however, befalls Fraser: wounded by Tex, he is abandoned in the forest, surrounded by wolves and the ghosts of the people he has killed... and he only has one shot in the chamber! The curtain also falls on Don Benavides, accomplice of the Black Dragon: he dies in his ranch conquered by the pards and the Mexican federals. Some time later, in a saloon in Abilene, Tex meets "Damned" Dick Dayton, his comrade at the time of the Civil War: the two recall their adventures, starting the story when they were simple cowboys. Having saved the herd from the clutches of the Southerners, Dick and Tex helped a Union spy who was being followed by a Confederate patrol. Once the soldier died, the two friends took it upon themselves to bring the precious war information to the Northerners on his behalf.
