The Scotsman Mac has left Fort Bliss and the army, for which he doesn't really feel suited. Bill Adams, who has demonstrated ability and determination, is offered promotion to sergeant and leadership of a contingent that will travel beyond the Rocky Mountains to establish a new fort.
