Ken Parker, traveling in northern Wyoming, comes across a stagecoach attacked by Indians on which nineteen-year-old Anne Lomax is traveling in search of her uncle. Together the two arrive in Sundance, a small town where shady businessmen have an interest in promoting the clash between Indian tribes and provoking a war.
Scout Parker commanded 7th Cavalry marching to Black Hills . However, the order bears the wrong date, and Ken has to hurry to reach the regiment. The run ends when Ken reaches the Little Big Horn after the battle.
The story takes place from June 14 to 27, 1876. (Custer's death occurred on June 25, but the battle of the Little Big Horn lasted until the night between 26 and 27: it was therefore only on the morning of June 27 that they could be recovered the bodies of Custer and his men.)
