A man is killed on the subway; an envelope addressed to Dr. Stanley Ludwig, a psychologist, is found in his raincoat. Nick and Marvin go to question the doctor and discover that he had lent his garment to a patient: the victim. It cannot be ruled out that the real target of the murderer was the psychologist. A few days later, the murderer corrects his aim and manages to eliminate Ludwig, but the doctor is only the latest victim of a series of "misfortunes" that have befallen his girlfriend's boyfriends. And it is in this woman's world that the murderer must be sought.
