The killing, in Italy, of old Giovanni Raidero, brother of Nick's grandfather, forces the agent, the victim's only heir, to go to the mountain town, the family's place of origin. Nick is made aware by the Carabinieri marshal of the recent developments in the case: it seems that it was a young man from the nearby drug rehabilitation community who killed the elderly man. However, Nick receives a visit from a frightened homeless man, who used to stay in the Raidero farmhouse; he saw everything and the killer is not who he thinks. Above all, the crime has distant roots, which date back to the war years.
