Greta Dorman hires Nathan Never to find her mother Diana, who mysteriously disappeared. Diana is a naturalist who studies mutated animals, such as hundred-legged ones, in the Territory. With the help of Diana's friend, John Adams, Nathan reconstructs the woman's moves and finds a gigantic cocoon hidden in a cave. Agent Alpha discovers that Diana has left for Mars and asks Jerry Lone for help to take him to that planet. With them there is also Gloria, a memory hunted by the yakuza and with whom Jerry is in love... Nathan, Jerry and Gloria, once on Mars, try to contact Rufus Kelsen, Jerry's friend, but he is killed by the cruel Commissioner Bourget and his mechanical dog P'Tichou, since he has contracted the Strikeshape virus. With the car of the kids Twinky and Pinky, Nathan tracks Diana down in the Martian underground, where the Gophers live. But to meet her he will have to enter the territory of the terrible and mysterious Proteus...
