Finally, after twenty years, Professor Jerome Drake leaves Rikers Island prison. They try to kill him, but an old friend, Domingo Sangrel, saves his life. The two meet in Santiago, Chile, the following month. First, however, the professor must go to Manaus, to meet his son Jerry... Mister No hates his father. Because he believes him to be a murderer and because he abandoned him, when Jerry needed him most, to go and fight in the Spanish War. Jerome Drake tells him how it really went down there: how he and the group of international volunteers of which he was the commander had come into possession of an enormous quantity of gold, and how Jerome himself had been betrayed by his best friend... The mysteries are clarified. Jerome Drake sees the fascinating Petra again, the Polish pasionaria with whom he fought in the Spanish War, and many other ex-combatants from both sides of the barricade. Together again, they go in search of Spanish gold. And with them there are also Mister No and Esse-Esse!
