A mysterious crime, carried out according to an ancient Sumerian ritual, leads Martin to investigate his fellow archaeologist Harkness who, during an excavation near Ur, was assistant to Professor James Farney. The latter is convinced that the perverse soul of the Sumerian god Marduk lives in Harkness and tries to kill him, but without success. The cruel Sumerian god Marduk, king of the gods and lord of Babylon, has incarnated in the body of the archaeologist Harkness and is threatening the very existence of New York City. Martin Mystère and Java will have to descend into the bowels of the metropolis to find its secret cave: if they fail to stop it, a huge tidal wave will sweep away the Big Apple!
