Ken and Susweca have found refuge in La Rochelle, guests of Spence and Kate a couple who have fostered the little "white Indian". The quiet family life is suddenly disturbed by the reappearance of Fanny, more than ever determined to kill Ken, and by the break-in at Spence's house by three outlaws hunted by Brady.
Ken and Susweca have been guests of Spence and Kate for four months. The story should therefore presumably take place in the spring of 1881.
